Not every gig is commercial. This one’s a birthday party — a proper one, with Baka Beyond (a favourite of my dad’s) and Undercover Hippy on the bill — and I’m playing it because I was asked, not because it’s ticketed anywhere.
That’s most of what I actually love doing: a beer garden on a Saturday, a small pub that wants something a bit different, someone’s fortieth where the music matters as much as the cake. Big or small, if there’s room for it, I’ll usually say yes.
Some of the best nights never make the calendar — until now.
